“Drink your milk, Tommy. The school bus will be here in ten minutes.”

Mother Jane turned wearily back to the stove and flipped the eggs over. She lifted the pot of coffee and poured a cup, then set it on the table in front of Father.

“Will you be home in time for Tommy’s school program?” Mother slid two eggs onto Father’s plate. She looked more tired than Tommy had ever seen.

Father bit into the eggs. “Can’t. Got business tonight.” He ignored her hurt expression.

“But I told you about his program weeks ago, and you said you’d be there.” She set the frying pan onto the burner and faced the stove. “Can’t you skip Bailey’s for just this night?” Mother’s voice had taken on an edge.

Father took a long swig of his coffee, as if he hadn’t even heard her.

She whirled around and her slender fingers alternately pinched and smoothed the fabric of her apron. “Did you hear me, Bartholomew?”

“Did you hear me, Bartholomew?” he mocked, making his voice sound thin and nasal.

Mother Jane lifted Tommy’s lunch box and handed it to him. “Go on, Tommy. Run on down to the bus stop.” She hurried him to the kitchen door and gave him a kiss before turning her attention back to her husband.

Father stuffed the last bit of eggs in his mouth and stood up. “I don’t know why I even bothered to come home for breakfast.”

Mother’s face contorted with uncharacteristic anger. “So, why did you? You could have slept in at your girlfriend’s place.”

Father looked surprised that she had dared to talk back. He slammed his fists onto the table and glared at her.

“I’ve put up with your drinking and your fists ‘cause I was taught to be a good wife.”

“That’s right, woman, so shut your trap before—”

“Before you hit me? Okay …” She thrust out her face and her voice trembled. “… hit me. But I’m not putting up with adultery. The Scriptures say I don’t have to.”

Tommy hadn’t left the house. He’d hidden near the kitchen doorway, clutching his lunchbox, watching the awful anger between his mother and father. Father’s chair scraped back against the tiled floor. Tommy scurried to hide in the hall closet. He pushed his body behind the thick cover of hanging coats.

“I drove down there last night … to Bailey’s,” Mother hissed. “I saw you getting in the car with that woman. So, you just go to work. Then go to the bar tonight and see your lady friend. But when you finally decide to come home, Tommy and I won’t be here.”

Father laughed. A horrible, mean, cruel sound. “Nobody runs out on me and gets away with it. I’ve got a reputation to keep up, and my wife isn’t going to ruin it by deserting me. I know everyone in the county, and I know everything about everyone. So, no one’s going to help you. You won’t get far.”

Mother started to cry. “I won’t stay with a man who breaks his wedding vows.”

Tommy heard movement, then Mother’s hurried steps into the front hallway.
